About Food Diversion Program

MA DEP estimates that 30% of trash consists of food waste or over 1 million tons per year. USDA reports estimate that food waste occurs at the highest level in elementary and middle schools due to standardized lunch plates. With the Food Diversion Program, students place their unwanted and uneaten cafeteria provided packaged foods and whole fruits into the cooler. The collected food would then be placed into snack bags, supplemented by pantry donations, and distributed to Newton students in need.
